The proposed bylaw would permit public utilities associated with the Connected Coast application in a site-specific zone, as the project’s cable is planned to land at the barge ramp and pass through marine and land zones.[1]
The Lasqueti Island Local Trust Committee voted to have staff prepare a draft amendment to the land use bylaw for the application, then asked staff to report back on December 16 with a revised timeline to expedite the process and include a public hearing.[1]
The minutes say the application is to bring the cable to the island, not distribute it; allowing public utilities only for this application would mean last-mile distribution required a separate rezoning application.[1]
During discussion, trustees and staff noted that the project’s funding ends in 2025 and that the proposed landing site is within 200 metres of an archaeological site; if archaeological materials are found, the applicant must stop work and follow specified procedures.[1]
The committee also asked that the Lasqueti Advisory Planning Commission be included in referrals related to the Official Community Plan policy on referring proposals to the commission before final consideration.[1]
