The Lasqueti Island Local Trust Committee approved a major project business case for a comprehensive Official Community Plan and Land Use Bylaw review, as amended, at its July 15 meeting. The approval followed staff’s request for input to inform the case.[1]
Trustees identified housing, climate change and Reconciliation as areas the current minor targeted review had not sufficiently addressed. They also discussed a community vision statement and objectives including foreshore protection, water considerations in subdivision regulations, marine protection, mooring buoys and public access.[1]
Staff identified housing options, climate change, an aging population and shoreline values among the issues for a comprehensive review. The minutes also list potential results including marine and shoreline protection, a mooring-buoy management plan and freshwater mapping work to support affordable housing initiatives.[1]
The minutes record staff’s assessment that a targeted review could mean less community consultation and a reduced scope because of budget limits; they also say the budget allowance for a minor project would not cover the First Nations engagement budget.[1]
